MADISON

Aweek later, I haven’t heard from Dante. He hasn’t even been to the bookstore, which is unusual. Normally, he’d stop by once a day at least. I’ve seen him in the distance passing, but he’s never been close.

I wonder if my willingness to be so fucked up for him scared him off. Maybe he thought I was this sweet, innocent little thing he intended to corrupt. Once he realized my fucked up life had already done that for me, he decided he was no longer interested.

“Madison! I’m so glad you could make it.” Eva pulls me into a hug.

I smile and return it. “Thank you for inviting me!” I shout over the loud music. “It’s good to get out of that cottage.”

She smiles. “Tessa really wanted you to come. She said we need to get to know you better!” She takes my hand and drags me through the crowd in her living room. Harper just turned twenty-five, so she threw her a party.

I like Eva and her friends but don’t want to get too attached to her. In the end, he’ll find me. He always does. I hope they don’t take it personally when I disappear without a word.

“Eva! Who are all these people?” I ask, looking around the room.

“Friends from School. That’s Darren and Tom over there,” She points to two guys standing by the drinks table, “and you know Jack, of course.”

“Hey, Madison!” Darren waves, a broad grin on his face. Tom, tall and athletic beside him, simply raises his glass in my direction.

Jack comes over, a beer in hand. “Madison, you’re here!” His friendly smile makes me relax a little.

“Wouldn’t miss Harper’s birthday, would I?” I reply, smiling.

“Who could miss a party like this?” Harper chimes in, appearing out of the crowd. “Madison, so glad you made it.”

“Happy Birthday, Harper,” I say, smiling.

“Thanks,” she says.

Suddenly, Tessa appears from the sea of party-goers with a glass of champagne. “Madison, there you are!” she beams, throwing an arm around my shoulders. “I was beginning to think you’d bailed on us. Can’t have you turning into a hermit now, can we?” She laughs, the sound echoing in the loud room.

Riley, the quiet one, simply gives me a nod from where she’s sitting. “Nice to see you, Madison,” she says, her voice barely audible over the music.

“Eva, you ever gonna introduce us to your new friend?” Darren teases, approaching us. “Or are you planning on keeping her all to yourself?”

“Darren, shut up!” Eva retorts, her cheeks flushing slightly. “Madison’s not an object to be passed around.”

“Hey, I didn’t mean it like that!” Darren protests, laughing.

“Sure, Darren,” Tom chimes in, sipping his drink. “Just like you didn’t mean it last time, right?”

The girls share a laugh. “Darren’s all talk,” Harper assures me, rolling her eyes. “He’s harmless.”

“All talk, huh?” Darren feigns insult, placing a hand over his heart. “That hurts, Harper.”

“Aw, get over it,” Riley murmurs, giving him a nonchalant wave. “You’ll survive.”

“Survive? Me?” Darren feigns a dramatic gasp. “I’m wounded. Cut me some slack.
